Maldives celebrates its Independence Day on 26 July. The day is marked by celebrations and parades across the island nation. Similarly, Republic day is celebrated on 11 November. Other important political events include Huravee Day, celebrated in memory of Sultan Hassan Izzudheen; Victory Day, commemorating the victory against a terrorists attack on 3 November 3 1998; and Martyr’s Day, in memory of Sultan Ali, a much respected national hero.
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan is followed with strict fasting and prayers across the island. Eid, marking the end of the holy month, is celebrated with vibrant processions, leading to Eid prayers. The procession includes music and a military display. The Prophet Mohammed’s birth anniversary is also a revered day, and is a public holiday.
