Before visiting the Maldives, it is advisable to get vaccination against typhoid, hepatitis A and polio. Medical facilities in Malé and the various resort islands are excellent. However, obtaining travel insurance is necessary.

Be sure to carry insect repellents and antibiotics; medicines should be carried in their original packaging along with their prescription. Always carry sun block and consume lots of water to avoid heat strokes and dehydration.

Petty thefts do occur on the island; hence, it is advisable not to leave your belongings unattended. Also, it is best to stay away from political gatherings and demonstrations.

The Asian Tsunami of 2004 affected Maldives severely, with many resorts being destroyed. Today, however, most establishments have recovered and have re-opened for business.
