Previously known to the world as Burma, Myanmar has a rich past dating back to 300 BC. Burma became a British Colony in the 1820s. The country served as a significant battle ground during the Second World War. This is where the war for Asia was fought between the Allies and Japan. Burma gained independence in 1948. However political and democratic stability have not found a place yet.

The local culture is deeply rooted in religion. Buddhism and the Mon culture are strongly reflected in the day to day life of Myanmar. In addition influences from India, China, Thailand and the colonial power, Britain, too find space in the cultural fabric of Myanmar. Like other Asian countries, Myanmar also follows a strict code of respect for seniority and one’s ancestors. Drama is another important aspect of Myanmar’s culture; every celebration needs to have a pwe (show).

Myanmar is situated in the Asian subcontinent. Myanmar shares boarders with China, India, Laos, Thailand and Bangladesh. The country can be divided into two geographic regions: lower Myanmar, comprising the coastline and the tropical forests, and upper Myanmar, comprising of the interiors.
