Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, is the capital of the Mandalay Division. Also referred to as the ‘City of Gems’, it was the last commanding capital of Myanmar before the British conquered the place. With a population of over two million inhabitants, Mandalay is now a major economic centre.
The city is typified by a semi-tropical climate with dry, cold winters and hot summers. It receives inadequate rainfall as it is located in a dry zone. The period from November to February is the best time to visit, owing to the cool and pleasant climate.
Mandalay was founded by King Minodin Min in 1859. The city grew actively to become a major trading and communications hub of the country. The city’s economy comprises of silk weaving, wood carving, jade cutting and the manufacturing of gold and silver ornaments.
