Settlement in this region was begun by a group of people belonging to the Tungusic branch who emigrated from north-west region of Asia. Due to constant threats of invasion from the neighbouring nations, North Korea decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world. The country’s ideologies are thus based on the principles of ‘Juche’ meaning self-reliance which was devised by the former head of the country and the Korean Worker’s Party—Kim Il-Sung.
Eventually, most literature and art forms in the country are a means to propagate Juche Idea. Most songs in the country are written in praise of Kim Il-Sung or his political ideologies. Any piece of art and literature that is produced is strictly screened by the state and the Korean Worker’s Party, and thus, there is absolutely no freedom of expression.
North Korea lies on the Korean Peninsula in east-Asia and is served by the Korea Bay, Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. It shares its boundary with China, Russia and South Korea and its terrain is dominated by mountains and highlands. Baekdu Mountain is the highest point in North Korea.
