Turtle Watching
Rating: |
See huge Green Turtles lumber up the beach to lay their eggs in the night at Ras Al Junaiz, then, return in the morning to watch the baby turtles hatching and scrambling in to the sea.
Oman First offers a two day round-trip tour by 4x4 vehicle from Muscat that includes turtle watching, contrasting cultural stops each way and overnight stay in an Arabian-style campsite.
The first day of the tour, en-route to Ras al Junaiz, makes stops at a Bedouin Souk, where you will witness Omani people bartering for camels and livestock, journey through various villages and visit one of the largest wadis in Oman - Wadi Bani Khalid - a mountain oasis of waterfalls and deep blue-green pools. A typical Omani dinner, stories around the campfire and an exciting evening watching turtles come ashore is followed the next day by the return journey to Muscat with visits to a Dhow (traditional Arabian boat) building yard at the ancient port of Sur, the cliff-top Bibi Mariam Tomb and an optional swim in the clear green water of Bait Al Afreet - a huge sinkhole near Dibab. Turtles can be seen at virtually any time of the year, though the best time to see large numbers is from June to November.
