Salalah lies in close proximity from the Arabian Desert in the southernmost part of Oman. It is the 2nd largest town in Oman and the birthplace of the Sultan, Qaboos bin Said. The town had a population of 190,348 as per the 2008 census. It has a large community from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The town enjoys a tropical climate all through the year with temperatures soaring to 40 degrees in summer and falling to 22 degrees in winter. In the Khareef season, from June to September, the town is subjected to the south west monsoons, making the place pleasant as compared to the rest of the region. The Khareef festival is held at Ittin during this period and various fairs and festivals are organized then. The Port of Salalah is managed by the APM Terminals which is a part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group of Denmark.
