Sohar is a city situated in Al Batinah in Oman. It lies 240 kilometers to the North West of the capital of Muscat. The city is believed to be the ancient capital of the Sultanate of Oman. The city has a rich sailing history and is also said to be the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor. The fort towns of Nizwa, Rustaq, Ibri and Nakhl lie close to the city. The tallest mountain in Oman, namely Jebel Akhdar also lies in close proximity from Sohar along with a few ancient copper mines. Copper extraction was carried out here almost 5000 years ago. There are a number of copper mines still operational in the city with more than eighteen million tons of copper deposits. The Sohar Port is a world class port with over 12 billion dollars invested in developing the port.
