The Merlion Statue is a symbol of Singapore depicting a half lion and half fish creature.
The story of the structure is believed to have originated from Sang Nila Utama, a Malay Prince from Temasek, who discovered the land of Singapore after his ship drowned in the sea and he landed at the mouth of the Singapore River where he was encountered by a red, black and white beast which resembled a Malayan Lion.
Considering it to be a good omen the prince named the city as Singapura or a lion city. The fish tail is said to represent Singapore’s link to the island of Temasek near the city where the prince started his journey from.
The Merlion statue faces the east which is an auspicious Feng Shui position and is a symbol welcoming all tourists to the city of Singapore.
There are 5 official Merlion statues in Singapore namely at the tourism court in Tanglin, two are at Merlion Park, one is at Mount Faber and the one at Sentosa is a taller replica of the original one.
