The Thian Hock Keng Temple is the most important and oldest temples of Singapore, built in 1842, and is also referred to as the temple of heavenly happiness.
The temple is dedicated to lord Matsu, the goddess of the sea according to the Taoist and the statue of Ma Cho Po is installed in the main prayer hall. There is another Buddhist temple behind this which is dedicated to Lord Kuan Yin, the god of mercy.
The temple was listed as a national monument in 1973. The temple has a grand entrance with gates featuring bright colored tiles representing the Buddhist swastika in brown and green and roses and peacocks, which are said to bring luck and immortality.
There are also lions, tigers and door gods guarding the entrance. Both sides of the temple have pagodas with the shrine of Confucius and ancestral tablets of refugees who established the temple.
