The National Museum of Singapore is one of the oldest and finest museums in the city started in 1849 which is 159 years old. The museum displays artifacts and gives information relating to the history of the city of Singapore from the 14th century and its formation.
The museum also includes the cultural history of the city with films, fashion, cuisine, photography and more.
There are 11 precious artifacts here namely the will of Munshi Abdullah, the hearse of Tan Jiak Kim, the earliest photographs of Singapore, the portrait of Frank Athelstane, the mace of the city, the portrait of the former governor of Singapore, William Farquhar’s drawings of flora and fauna, Xin Sai Le puppet stage, Peranakan coffin cover, the gold ornaments of the sacred hill and the Singapore Stone.
The museum has recently been renovated and officially inaugurated by the President of Singapore in 2006 after which the Singapore History Gallery was included in the display.
