Hungnam is the third largest city in North Korea. It is a port city which lies along the eastern side of South Hamgyong Province on the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea). It is only eight miles from the little inner city of Hungnam. The city is home to a huge fertilizer complex, which allegedly is also used to fabricate chemical weapons and is the home of the Hungnam Chemical Engineering College. Winters are generally long, dry and cold. Summers are hot, short and humid. Autumn and spring are pleasant and short. Average temperature of the city in January is -5 ° C to - 2.5 ° C and in July, average temperature is above 22.5 ° C to 25 ° C. This city gets a rainfall of 100 centimetres in most of the pars and in rare cases it decreases to 75 centimetres and below. Precipitation amounts differ from year to year. Maximum rainfall is obtained during the months of June to September. So the city gets sufficient rainfall through out the year.
