Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of the 5 grand palaces built by the Joseon dynasty in northern Seoul.
This is the largest palace which was originally built by King Taejo in 1394. However, the palace was burnt during the invasion of Korea by the Japanese in 16th century.
After renovation, this palace formed a complex with three hundred and thirty three buildings with more than five thousand rooms.
The main building on the site is the Geunjeongjeon which is the imperial throne room and the Gyeonghoeru pavilion which is situated in an imitation lotus lake with 48 granite columns.
The main entrance to the palace is called the Gwanghwamun which is being restored to its previous size. The Blue House is the garden at the rear of the palace which contains the previous governor-general’s residence.
