Elephant Orphanage
The Elephant Orphanage is located 13 Kms from Kegalle town off the main Colombo-Kandy Road. It is the singular sanctuary in the world that is dedicated towards young elephants who have lost their natural habitats. These elephants are fed milk by handheld bottles. The tourists can enjoy elephant rides and view them playing in the water.
Western Shrines
16 Kms towards the west of Kandy are located the Western Shrines which are made up of three temples. Gadaladeniya Temple is constructed from stone and here one can view a seated Buddha image, carved stone friezes, wall murals and lacquered doors. The architecture is identical to south Indian type. Lankatilaka Temple is a brick building that has three storeys and there is a seated image of the Buddha. The original paint on the ceilings and walls is still fresh and bright and the doors of wood are also painted. The Embekke Temple is dedicated to God Kataragama and the pillars here have beautiful designs of birds, legendary beats, wrestlers, musicians and dancers.
