The National museum of Natural history also known as the Sri Lanka National Museum is one of the two museums located in Colombo 07, at Cinnamon Gardens. Established in 1877, it is a popular tourist destination of Colombo. It is set up as the largest museum in Sri Lanka and is maintained by the central government of Sri Lanka. The museum was founded by Sir William Henry George, the British Governor of the Ceylon. The museum displays natural and cultural heritage of the country.
The museum displays different kinds of mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, gems, botanical plants, geological specimens and other interesting things found in the island. The department of etymology division of National museum has a collection of over 95,000 dry mounted insect specimens in storage cabinets and over 5,000 wet preserved insect specimens in alcohol. The botany section has a wide collection of specimens comprising of 1,500 dried plant materials and a small wet-preserved collection.
