Hikkaduwa is a coastal town located on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka. Situated close to the historic town of Galle, it is an international tourist destination. Known to be a surfer town with its sandy beaches, sea-side resorts and discos, it is home to a population of about 130,000 residents.
Characterised by a tropical climate, Hikkaduwa has summers which are exceedingly hot. However, it can be quite cool in winters with rainfall experienced throughout the year in short showers.
The place was affected by the tsunami that occurred in 2004. However, owing to the relief measures taken by the government, the place continued to develop as a tourist destination. Fishery, agriculture, tourism and food-processing are the main occupations in the city.
