Kotte is located beyond the eastern suburbs of the commercial capital Colombo and is often known as New Capital Territory.

The village of Darugama was already a secure place and it was not easy for enemies to enter this place. One of the chief of this village named Nissanka Alagakkonara built a fortress and called it Kotte to protect it from the invasion from Jaffna Kingdom of Arya Chakaravarthi.

The place is rich in cultural heritage and has various sightseeing that worth watching. The people over her are quite generous and welcome its visitors with a warm hospitality.

The climate of this place is quite moderate and can be visited at any time of the year.


The population of this palce comes to 115,826 according to 2001 census.
