Kurunegala is located at Wayamba Province of Sri Lanka.
Also known as the transport hub this place with several main roads that links to important parts of the country. The place was named after the elephant Rock “Kurune” that means Tusker or an elephant with protruding teeth and Gala in Sinhala means rock. Earlier the name of the city was Hasthishailyapura that menat as the city of Elephant rock. Close to this city there are historical sites that are worth watching and reflect the past of this place.
According to the legend of this place, longtime back the city suffered from drought and the animals threatened that they will consume all the water that is present in this place and they will not let the human beings survive any, but all of a sudden a witch came to rescue and transformed many animal into stone figures.
The climate of this place is quite moderate and can be visited at any time of the year.
The population of this place comes to 1,460,200 according to 2001 census.
