Hama, located in Central Syria, is a city lying on the banks of Orontes River. It is also the provincial capital of the Hama Governorate.
Like the rest of the Syria, Hama also experiences moderate climate characterised by dry, hot summers and mild, cold winters. The temperature averages between 34°C to 3°C annually.
With a population of approximately 410,000 people, Hama is one of the largest cities in Syria in terms of population.
The history of Hama dates back to 2,000 BC, while the evidence of human settlement dates back to around 1100 BC when the small kingdom of Hamath was ruled form the citadel hill. During the Selucid, the city became an administrative centre of minor importance and was renamed as Epiphania. This administrative role of the city continued into the Roman and Byzantine eras.
