Hama: Attractions and more...
Hama has several sites of interest, the two most leading ones being the citadel and the ancient Norias (water wheels). The Norias scoop the water form the Orontes River and pours it into the irrigation canals. The groaning sound of the Norias adds to the character of this ancient city.
Being a clean and conservative town, Hama has modern buildings co-existing with the ancient past. Other attractions within the city includes the Azem Palace, the Governor’s residence during the Ottoman Empire. Nearby lies the An-Nuri Mosque; it was built for the uncle of Saladin Nur al-Din.
In the Al-Madina quarter of the city, one can find the Citadel nestled between the parks and riverside gardens. Also, the Great Mosque built by the Umayyed Dynasty is located here. Close by is the Orthodox Church.
The Muhrajan al-Rabi, the Spring Festival in April, is the best time to enjoy the local customs and traditions displayed during the festival in the city.
