Homs is the third largest city in Syria. It is located in a strategic point, between the desert and the coast in a break between the mountains, known as the Homs gap. It lies between the cities of Damascus and Aleppo. Homs city is also the capital for the Homs Governorate.
With a tropical climate, the city experiences moderate summers and winters. The temperature ranges from 31°C to 8°C.
The city has an approximate population of 1,033,000. The city was established in 2300 BC. In fact, the city was known by the name of Emesa.
Homs is an important industrial city and Syria’s most important oil refining centre. Due to its significant location near the fertile Orontes River Valley, agriculture forms an integral part of Homs’s economy. It produces wheat, corn, millet, cotton fruit and vegetables.
