Tourist Guide Palmyra
Palmyra is a city located in the heart of the Syrian Desert in Syria. The city is located in an oasis, to the north-east of Damascus and south-west of Euphrates. Known as Tadmor in Arabic, Palmyra is referred to as the ‘bride of the desert’.
The city of Palmyra experiences a desert climate, more arid and characterised by colder and extreme winters and hotter, drier summers. The average temperature in August is 30°C while that in the month of January is 6°C.
Palmyra has an approximate population of 43,000 people.
The strategic location of the city on the oasis allowed Palmyra to flourish into a prosperous kingdom from the second century BC. After the Romans conquered Syria, Palmyra came to be known as the city of palm trees. Palmyra flourished a lot under the rule of Queen Zenobia, who proved to be a serious threat to the Romans.
