Tourist Guide Shahba

Shahba, located 87 km south of Damascus, is a city in Syria. This Roman city is situated in Jabal el Druze in Muhafazat as Suwayda. Shahba is also known as Philippopolis and is one of those rare roman cities which were built from nothing, unlike those which have Arab or Hellenistic origins.

Like Damascus, Shahba experiences a moderate climate. The summers are hot and humid while the winters are mild but cold. The annual average temperature ranges from 0.4°C to 35.5°C.

Shahba is a small and sparsely populated city with approximately 6,000 inhabitants, within a radius of 7 km.

Emperor Philip, who commissioned to build this city as his symbolic capital, founded the city. But, with his demise, the city was left uncompleted. Druze occupied the abandoned city much later, when he emigrated from Lebanon.
