Water in Taiwan is not safe for drinking and tourists should stick to bottled water or boil the tap water properly before consuming. However, restaurants, hotels etc. serve filtered water which is quite safe for drinking. Raw food should be avoided at all costs.
Crime rates are very low in the country, and it is very safe for tourists. However, it is always better to be cautious when alone or in crowded night markets and during festivals, where there is a threat of pick-pocketing. Extra care has to be taken while crossing roads as incidents of reckless driving are quite common in the cities.
Hospitals in Taiwan are of very high standard with excellent healthcare facilities and are relatively less expensive than those in the West. One does not need vaccinations, other than against typhoid before visiting Taiwan.
Tourists are expected to respect the Taiwanese culture and should behave in a polite manner at all times, especially with the elders.
