Things to Do in Chiang Rai: attractions to See in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai: Attractions and more...

Chiang Rai is home to the Phrathat Doi Tung, a holy relic which draws Buddhist pilgrims from across the borders; the relic is situated on the 2000-metre-high Doi Tung Mountain (from where you can even see as far as Myanmar and Laos).

The Wat Phra Kaeo is a famous temple that used to house the Emerald Buddha (the holiest in Thailand), while the Wat Jet Yot has a striking Thai astrological fresco on its ceiling.

Atop the Ngam Muang Hill, outside the city, you can find the Monument of King Mengrai, which is a stupa housing the ashes and relics of the city’s founder. Also visit other attractions like Doi Mae Salong (a mountain village offering a panoramic view from the top) and the Namtok Pu Kaeng, which is the largest waterfall in the province.

Lastly, experience the Lychee Fair held every May; you could buy souvenirs like hill tribe silver ornaments or just sample delicacies like Naem and Mu Yo (preserved pork sausages).
