Temple of the Reclining Buddha is one of the most famous landmarks of Ayutthaya.

The highlight of this temple is, obviously, the gigantic yet graceful reclining Buddha image, known locally as Phra Bhudhsaiyart. The image symbolizes the passing of Buddha to the Nirvana state.

The image is made up of bricks and covered with mortar. It is thirty-seven meters long and seven meters high. The style of construction suggests it was built during the early Ayutthayan period.

The image is always covered in a bright saffron colored cloth, which looks striking against the backdrop of the blue sky. The toes of the image are equal in size and the feet are inscribed with hundred-and-eight characteristics of the Lord. Both eyes and feet are decorated with a mother-of-pearl style.

Apart from the grand statue, this temple has around one-thousand Buddha statues. They are presumably obtained from the ruins of the former capital of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
