Wat Yai Chai Mongkol is situated near the main ruins of Ayutthaya which is at a short distance from the Ayutthaya walls.
The monastery was built by King U Thong in 1357 as a resting place for monks who returned from Ceylon after completion of their studies.
It houses an astoundingly large statue of the reclining Buddha inside the temple compounds. It is the biggest in Thailand and made of stone with height of eight meters and length of thirty-seven meters.
In 1592, King Naresuan announced independence from Burma and erected a large stupa. It can seen from afar even today.
This stupa is surrounded by a series of sitting Buddha idols, all wrapped in saffron colored robes. The site has plenty to offer and is often crowded with tourists.
Visitors are advised to reserve plenty of time for thorough sight-seeing.
