Wiharn Phra Mongkhonbophit is a religious site which houses the meditating Buddha image . The Buddha image is believed to be originally sculptured during the reign of King Chairacha in the year 1583, at Wat Chichiang.
During the very early years, there wasn’t any specific burial site for the cremation ceremony and the site of Phra Mongkhonbophit was originally reserved for the royal burial.
King Song Tham in 1610, ordered the large Buddha Image to be moved from the east to the west side and a sanctuary (Wihar) was then constructed to house the Buddha image.
It is believed that during the kingship of Sua, lightning struck and the wihar was destroyed, but it was soon re-built. In 1758, King Borommakot fully restored the wihar, but it was again burnt during the Burmese attacks in 1767.
Today, the temple mostly lies in ruins, but the Buddha image has been restored and spreads the message of peace and tranquility.
