The Ayuthaya Historical Park covers the old city of Ayuthaya, discovered by King Ramathibodi I in the year of 1350.

It served as the capital city of Thailand for over 417 years and has seen the reign of thirty-three kings spanning 5 dynasties. The Fine Arts Department started renovation of the ruins in 1969 and during 1976 it became a historical park.

Finally, in 1981, UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage site. The park holds much of the old-town buildings, temples and palace ruins dating back to the Ayutthaya Era. A statue of Buddha in a tree trunk is especially famous.

Each year during December, citizens of Ayutthaya celebrate the splendor of its glorious past in the park in the form of Ayutthaya World Heritage Day.

Displays of traditional lifestyles and cultures, variety of entertainment and a fascinating light-music show all fit perfectly on the backdrop of the park’s ancient temples and ruins.
