The Wat Traimit temple is situated at the end of the Yaowarat road and is close to the Hualampong Railway Station. It is Bangkok’s most popular attractions.
The temple houses the world’s largest sitting Buddha idol which is made of gold. It stands nearly 5 meters in height and weighs about five-and-half tons. The gold value easily exceeds $100 million.
The legend explains that artists carved the idol from gold and covered it in a casing of plaster and stucco so as to fool the invading armies. It was discovered to be made of gold only when it was accidentally dropped, revealing a solid gold Kukhothai-style Buddha idol.
The pieces of this plaster are also on display in the temple. A number of gongs are located outside the temple. It is open on all days and visit is free-of-charge
