Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Wat Phra Chetuphon or otherwise known as ‘The Reclining Temple of Buddha’ is situated on Maharat Road, near the Grand Palace, and was built around 1788.
The temple was built to encourage education to Thai medicine and massages.
The temple was restored and extended during 1824-51 under King Rama III and finally restored again in 1982. It is built around two walled compounds consisting of the main temple, a massage school and a Buddhist monastery.
The Reclining Temple of Buddha is the largest and the oldest temple of Bangkok depicting more than one thousand images of Lord Buddha. It also included the sculpture of the reclining Buddha which is 46 meters long and 15 meters high.
The body is gold-plated and decorated with mother of pearl placed on his eyes and soles. The bottom of the sculpture is intricately decorated with 108 auspicious scenes depicting the history in Chinese and Indian Style.
The visiting hours of this temple are from eight in the morning until five in the evening while massages are offered until six in the evening.
