The village of Santikhiri, previously known as Mae Salong, is situated on the Doi Mae Salong Mountain in Chiang Rai province. The landscape of the village is alpine-like and is famous for its hill-tribe village, cherry blossoms and tea-plantations.
It is famously known as ‘Little Switzerland’. It is amongst the top ten destinations for backpackers.
This is a quaint little village with its winding and narrow streets which are lined with teashops, inns and noodle shops. The village is most well-known for its ‘High Mountain Oolong’ or traditional Chinese tea which makes up almost eighty percent of all tea products for Chiang Rai.
From December to January in each year, the village celebrates the cherry blossoms festival which is a showcase of the tribe culture from area of Chiang Rai. A light & sound show, a handcraft show, a beauty contest and a tribe parade are all part of the festival.
The Martyr’s Memorial is a museum which is devoted to soldiers who were killed in the fight against communism. The building’s construction resembles a huge Chinese shrine. Phra Boromathat Chedi is built in the honor of the local Princess Mother.
