Wat Phra That Doi Tung is easily amongst Thailand’s more scenic, interesting and difficult to reach temples. It is situated in the province of Chiang Rai, which is the most northerly region of Thailand, located 1800m above sea-level.
The temple was constructed by the King of Chiang Saen in the Lanna style. Its twin stupas are visible even from a great distance and date back to 910AD.
The temple has been a favorite pilgrimage point of the Buddhist monk from China, Burma and Thailand. Despite being a difficult location to reach, it can easily get crowded.
It is customary amongst visitors to ring the bells to announce their presence. Many tour companies provide direct stops at the site and more adventurous travelers can hire motorbikes from Chiang Rai and ride through hills.
However, it is advisable not to travel alone late in the evening.
