Thailand : Culture and Geography

Thailand, previously known as Siam, was under the Khmer rule during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In 1238, local leaders fought for independence from the regime. It is the only Southeast Asian country not to be colonized by any European power. While it has been a free nation, its tryst with democracy has not been as successful. The Thai army has always been involved with governing, and military coups are a common occurrence.

The local culture is rooted in religion and tradition. Respect for seniority and for ancestors is a very important part of Thai life. Influences from India and China can also be seen, especially in Thai art and literature. The people of Thailand greet each other with the traditional wai salutation, where you bow slightly with your hands folded. It is important to note that public displays of affection are frowned upon in Thailand.

Thailand is situated in Southeast Asia. It shares boarders with Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia. The country can be divided into four geographical regions: mountainous in the north and south, semi arid plateau in the northeast, rich fertile plains in the central region and tropical islands along the coast.
