Kanchanaburi attracts several tourists because of the bridge over the Kwai Noi, which was made famous by a popular 1957 movie, Bridge over the River Kwai, and novel which depicted events centred on the Bridge.
The structure was also the starting point of the ‘Death Railway’, which got its name from the death of 160,000 prisoners of World War II and workers who constructed the line in hellish conditions. A part of the original bridge is on display at the War Museum, while war memorials can be found at the Hell Fire Pass Memorial Museum outside the city.
Near Kanchanaburi, you can tour the town of Nakhon Pathom, which has the world’s highest Buddhist stupa, the Three Pagodas Pass (at the border of Thailand and Myanmar) and the Tiger Temple in the Sai Yok district where tamed tigers roam.
Also visit the Erawan Waterfalls (one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand) and the Erawan National Park with its variety of Asian flora and fauna.
