The proximity to Myanmar has resulted in a strong Burmese influence; this is evident in the architecture of the town like the Wat Jong Klam, with its little roofs piled on top of one another and golden crowns designed atop the square-based chedis. The Wat Phralhat Doi Kong Mu is a hilltop temple that has a fantastic view of the surroundings.
Also visit the Fish Cave, which is actually an entire country park and has a lovely relaxing ambience. From there, take an elephant ride and visit the hill tribe villages such as the Baan Nai-Soi-Shan village, where you can spot the Long Neck Giraffe Women.
At the centre of Mae Hong Son, one can find a beautiful artificial lake called John Kum. Nearby, you can find restaurants offering spicy Thai cuisine and delicacies like curries, rice and noodles, shrimp salads and a popular dessert called Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango.
