Nong Khai is the capital of the Nong Khai Province in the north-eastern Isaan region of Thailand. This town lies on the western banks of the Mekong River. The Thai capital, Bangkok, is over 600 km from Nong Khai. The city is also the terminus of the railway line from Bangkok.
Nong Khai is a border town and the site of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Thailand with Laos. Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is just 20 km from Nong Khai. Vietnamese culture and influence is reflected in the architecture and the cuisine of the town.
Nong Khai has hot summers with a maximum temperature of 35°C and chilly winters with minimum temperatures of 11°C.
The population of Nong Khai is more than 50,000 people. Tourism is an important mainstay of the town’s economy, with tourists to Laos often visiting Nong Khai.
