Begin your sightseeing of Songkhla by visiting the National Museum, an impressive Chinese-designed mansion housing a sixth-century idol of Lord Ganesha and European and Chinese ceramics.
Another must-visit is the 400-year-old Wat Matchimawat, which is located in the heart of the city and hosts a branch of the National Museum. The nineteenth-century murals and tableaux showing the life of Buddha is a treat to the eyes.
Nearby is the City Pillar of Songkhla, located in a Chinese-styled structure, and a Chinese opera stage, which regularly hosts performances during festivals. You can see a holy relic of the Buddha obtained from Sri Lanka at the Wat Chaimongkhom.
Two hills separate the town from its beaches. The taller hill, called Khao Tung Kuan, has a chedi (stupa) and a chalet built by King Rama V. Popular beaches include the Samila Beach (where you can find the Golden Mermaid Statue) and the Son Onn Beach, with a chain of seafood restaurants.
