Ban Chiang is the most vital prehistoric settlement which has been discovered till date in South-East Asia. This historic site marks a significant stage in human social, cultural and technological evolution. Moreover, this site offers the earliest such evidences of farming in the region and use of metals and manufacturing process. Ban Chiang area is quite close to Udon Thani. At the site, the archaeologists found rock shelter and cave dwellers historic story, and they were hunter and gatherers. It was almost 5600 years ago, that these prehistoric settlements emerged in Ban Chiang engaged in rice cultivation. These people were situated on low to middle terraces of main and tributary streams. The settlers were small in number and lived in wooden houses which were built on stilts. Here, at the site, ornaments, vessels and such shreds of painted ceramic ware were discovered by chance by villagers in 1957.
