Due to the country being under the Chinese control, most holidays and events are the same as those in China. However, there are quite a few regional celebrations as well. Parinirvana, which marks the death of Buddha, is celebrated on 9 February and is a public holiday. Other important celebrations include the Chinese New Year and Lhabab Düchen (November or December), marking the descent of Buddha from heaven.
The Year End Festival (February or March), Losar, Lantern Festival and Mönlam Festival are very interesting and colourful celebrations that are worth being a part of.
The Gyantse Horse Racing Festival is celebrated in July and draws a huge crowd due the several colourful parades, traditional music and dance performances; archery and equestrian are also a part of this celebration.
