Merv presents the visitors with many archaeological wonders like the Erk Kala, the Gaur Kala, the Sultan Kala, the Mohammed Ibn Saiyad Mausoleum and many more.
The most significant site of Merv is the Erk Kala, also called Alexandria. It is a polygonal construction surrounded by huge imposing walls and tall towers. It is believed to be an ancient palace of a ruler.
Gaur Kala, also called Antiokhia, is an archaeological site dating back to 238 BC. The construction is still in good condition and is reminiscent of the era of the ruling empires. The place gives the visitors an insight to the religions followed in the ancient times through its various inscriptions.
Another magnificent architectural wonder is the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. Built in the twelfth century, it displays a stunning blue dome which can be seen from a distance. The walls and the tiles are embellished with a riot of colours.
