In southwestern Vietnam, the Mekong River creates a network of distributaries and flows into the South China Sea. This delta region which is spread over approximately 39,000 square kilometers is called as the Mekong Delta.
There are 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta. As per the 2004 census, the population of this Delta was 17.415 million. This wide and flat plain has a sub-equatorial climate and is affected by the tropical monsoon. The temperature alters from 24.5 to 28.9 degrees Celsius.
There is maximum rainfall during September and October and from December to March is the dry season. A large percentage of people in this region are ethnic Viet. There are also some minority population and considerable Hoa (ethnic Chinese) inhabitants.
