Located along the shores of red Sea, Al Hudaydah is a significant port; which exports hides, dates, cotton, and coffee. It had been developed in the form of seaport in mid-nineteenth century; thanks to Ottoman Turks.
In the year 1914, at the time of World War I, various German troops which had been led by none other than Major Freiherr Othmar von Stotzingen went on to establish wireless station over here; that was utilized at the time of Arab revolt for relaying communications between German East Africa and Istanbul; and also broadcast propaganda towards Abyssinia, Somaliland, and Sudan.
A massive fire struck this city in the month of January in the year 1961; which happened to destroy majority of city. Reconstruction on its part took place with Soviet help; especially port facilities.
