Tap water in Yemen is absolutely unsafe for drinking (may cause diarrhoea) and tourists should always go for bottled water. Also, due to the prevailing mass poverty one cannot expect to get health care facilities of a very high standard, and thus, tourists have to be very careful about their health.
Immunisation against hepatitis is advised to all those considering a visit to Yemen. Travellers should always carry insect repellent with them as the risk of contracting malaria is quite high.
There are several incidents of kidnapping in the sparsely inhabited areas and tourist should always seek local guidance while planning a hike to the outskirts. Yemen is also under threats of terrorism; thus, tourist at all times should be well informed about the local security conditions.
Tourists should always ask before taking pictures of people as well as structures. Visitors are also expected to bargain while shopping.
