Sanaa, the capital and largest city of Yemen with about 1.300.000 inhabitants,
is located on a 2,350 mt. high plain, connected to the Red Sea port of Hodeida
by road.
Sanaa is known as one of the oldest urban settlements of mankind and is often
referred to as the Land of Queen Sheba.
Probably has been founded by Shem, one of the three sons of Noah.
Sanaa became Yemen’s capital in 1918. Thirty years later the capital was
moved to Taiz, but returned to Sanaa in 1962 at the founding of the Yemen Arab
Republic.
Upon unification with Southern Yemen in 1990, it was confirmed as the capital
of the new, unified Republic of Yemen.
Sanaa, which translates from Arabic as ‘fortified place’, is an
Islamic cultural centre, with a lovely architecture, a Muslim university, many
mosques and an ancient way of life especially in Old Sanaa (the largest preserved
old city in the Arab world).
The city is served by an international airport.
