Shibam is a town in Hadramaut, Yemen, with outstanding architecture and rich cultural heritage. Also referred to as the ‘Manhattan of the desert’, Shibam houses a small populace of about 7,000 inhabitants. Situated in the midst of the Hadramaut Wadi, it is filled with tall constructions and is often called the ‘oldest skyscraper city in the world’.
The climate of Shibam is mostly hot and humid. However, it can be extremely dry as a result of the desert air. The area receives seasonal monsoon rains which affect the temperatures to a great extent. Overall, this area has a typical desert climate.
The city is said to be around 2,000 years old with most of its constructions built in the sixteenth century. In recent times, the people of the city have been involved in agriculture as a main occupation, followed by with handicrafts.
