Zabid can be referred to as a town on ‘western coastal plain’ of Yemen. The name ‘Zabid’ has been derived from ‘Wadi Zabid’. It is the wadi located on the southern side of this city.
Zabid was capital of ‘Yemen’ between 13th and 15th century. Moreover, it was the center of Muslim and Arab world; thanks to ‘University of Zabid’. Now, it can be inferred that Zabid had been a hub of ‘Islamic Education’. Ziyadid Dynasty had this city as its capital between 819 A.D and 1018 A.D. It was capital of Najahid dynasty between 1022 A.D and 1158 A.D.
The present scenario, however, is that it’s at intellectual as well as economic margins with regards to contemporary Yemen. Zabid enjoys the pride of being declared one amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. An important place is occupied by its ‘Great Mosque’.
The year 2000 witnessed listing of Zabid in endangered world heritages. This listing had been made due to request by Yemeni government owing to poor maintenance.
The climate is very hot. Hence, it’s advisable to visit Zabid during winter season.
