The city of Codrington is located on the island of Barbuda, and is part of the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
Codrington is the island’s largest city and the land is mostly rocky and flat. The city is surrounded by a number of natural tropical lagoons. The climate is tropical, generally characterised with lots of sun and a mild breeze.
Codrington is named after Sir Christopher Codrington, an enterprising British explorer who came here in 1684 to set up a sugar plantation.
Although this tiny city has a population of only 1,500 people, it has played a very important role in the history of Antigua and Barbuda. The famous Beach Rebellion occurred here in 1741.
Most of the inhabitants of Codrington are descendants of the slaves that were brought in by Christopher Codrington from Africa to work on his sugarcane plantations.
