Antigua & Barbuda : Culture and Geography

Traces of human existence on the islands date back to 2400 BC. The original inhabitants of this region were the Siboney. Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover the island in fifteenth century. After the Spanish came the British, and finally the French.
Antigua and Barbuda became independent on 1 November 1981. Prior to independence these islands served as a source for slaves for the sugar plantation; slavery was abolished in 1834.

As the country was a colony of many countries, its culture is very interesting and diverse. There are a number of colourful forms of dance and music found all over the island. There are quite a few handicrafts made and sold by the local people. Soca music and Calypso are the most important form of music.

This country is located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Antigua’s shores have deep indentation while that of Barbuda are almost continuous. This country is famous for its countless beautiful beaches where tourists are attracted in great numbers.

Its terrain comprises mainly of low-lying limestone and coral islands. The country also has volcanic areas with Boggy Peak being the highest point of elevation.
