English Harbour is located in the island of Antigua. It was originally developed as a base for the British Navy during the late eighteenth century, hence the name.
This little town which has a population of about eight hundred people is rich in history. The town itself is built surrounding the Nelson Dockyard and has two sheltered deep water harbours.
The climate is tropical and sunny with a pleasant breeze that blows throughout the day. The month of February brings rain, lasting till May.
Although the dockyard and Naval base is no longer in use, it has been fully restored, and is a major attraction for English Harbour’s primary business of tourism. The populace consists mainly of the descendants of African slaves, along with a smattering of the British and Portuguese.
